| Difficulties with colour

I love drawing in black and white, and photographing in colour. By some strange quirk, the converse of these has always been difficult for me. But I am trying to counter this now by going back to basics - starting with simple cartoon images.

This was painted on canvas some 20 odd years ago. I was experimenting with oil paints, especially colour and gradations. I tried to mimic an abstract style, rather than create my own. It measures 12" by 8".

This is a coloured pencil drawing. It is about 18" by 12", and took just 2 hours to create one evening. The image here is a little bit harsher than the original. It is best seen at a distance, when the dots fuse together to create colour flows and shapes.

| Cartoon images

My difficulties with painting include accurate colour mixing, precise brush handling, and the media. So I moved from rough canvas to smooth card, and chose simple images with blocks of colour to paint. This meant just a little mixing, and a very fine brush allowed me to paint accurately. It's a start.
Update April 2002 - trying to diversify - with difficulty!
